What is a gyroscope

A gyroscope is a small sensor that measures rotation and orientation. In phones, tablets, and some game controllers, a MEMS gyroscope tracks how fast the device is rotating around each axis, while a companion accelerometer tracks tilt and straight line movement. Together they let a device understand its orientation in 3D space. This is often searched as gyroscope test, gyro tester, motion sensor test, or gyroscope calibration.

Pitch, roll, and yaw

Pitch is tilting forward or backward, like nodding. Roll is tilting side to side, like a steering wheel. Yaw is rotating flat, like shaking your head no. These three axes fully describe an object orientation.

Gyroscope versus accelerometer

A gyroscope measures rotation speed around an axis. An accelerometer measures straight line acceleration and gravity direction. Motion aiming and orientation features usually combine both sensors.

Gyro drift is normal

Small errors accumulate over time in any MEMS gyroscope, causing a slow drift even at rest. Periodic calibration resets this baseline and keeps readings accurate.

A note on testing controller gyro in a browser

The standard Gamepad API that browsers use to read buttons and sticks does not expose gyroscope data for any controller, even on hardware that physically has a gyro chip. Reading raw controller motion data reliably requires lower level access such as WebHID with device specific report parsing, which varies by controller model and connection type and is not consistently supported across browsers. For that reason, the live test above measures your phone or tablet own gyroscope, which uses the standard and reliable DeviceOrientationEvent API. To check gyro function on a PlayStation or Switch controller, use the motion calibration menu built into the console or PC driver software, or a game that supports gyro aiming.

Fixing common gyroscope problems

  • If readings drift slowly while the device sits still, place it flat on a table and use the Calibrate button to reset the baseline.
  • If nothing updates at all, check that motion permission was granted, this is required on iOS Safari and some Android browsers.
  • If tilt readings feel reversed or rotated, check that your browser reports orientation relative to the correct screen rotation lock.
  • On a controller, gyro aiming that feels shaky is more often caused by grip tension or Bluetooth interference than a faulty sensor, try a wired connection to compare.
  • Recalibrate your controller before long play sessions the same way you would a phone, most PlayStation and Switch controllers auto calibrate from a few seconds of stillness.

Why does this test need my phone and not my computer?

Most desktop and laptop computers do not have a physical gyroscope chip, so there is no live sensor data to read. Phones and tablets almost always include one.

Why did my browser ask for motion permission?

iOS Safari and some Android browsers require explicit permission before a website can access motion sensors, this protects your privacy. Tap Allow when prompted to see live data.

Can I test my PS5 or Switch controller gyro here?

Not directly through this browser test. Standard web APIs do not expose gyroscope data from a connected game controller, even though the hardware itself supports motion. Use your console settings menu or a gyro compatible game to check controller motion function.

Does Xbox have a gyroscope?

No standard Xbox controller has ever included gyroscope hardware. If you want gyro aiming on PC, a PlayStation or Switch controller connected over Bluetooth is required.

What is gyro drift?

Gyro drift is a slow accumulation of small measurement errors that causes a stationary sensor to report gradual movement it did not actually experience. It is a normal property of MEMS gyroscopes, not usually a defect, and periodic calibration corrects it.

My readings look shaky or noisy. Is my gyroscope broken?

Some noise is expected, especially on cheaper sensors. Try calibrating on a flat, still surface, and compare readings from a slow deliberate rotation, which should look much smoother than random handheld jitter.

What is gyro aiming used for in games?

Gyro aiming uses a controller motion sensor for fine camera adjustments, similar to a mouse, while the analog stick handles large sweeps. It is popular in games like Splatoon and many PC shooter ports on PlayStation and Switch controllers.

Why do pitch, roll, and yaw values not update on my laptop?

This is expected. Most laptops lack the gyroscope hardware entirely, so there is no sensor for the browser to read regardless of permissions.
