The Series controller, model 1914, looks almost identical to the Xbox One pad it replaced and behaves differently in three ways that matter. It has a Share button that sits outside the standard button numbering and gets swallowed by Windows more often than not. It has a dished hybrid D-pad that actually rolls, which the old plus shaped pad never really did. And it runs firmware that has changed how it connects more than once since launch. This page tests every input, hunts down where your Share button is really landing, and includes a roll check so you can see the D-pad difference for yourself rather than taking a marketing line on trust.

Step by Step, Start to Finish

The whole run takes about four minutes. Follow it in this order and you will not have to come back and repeat anything.

Step one, connect the controller

Use a USB-C cable for your first run if you have one. It removes the wireless link from every number you are about to read, which makes the results easier to trust. The cable has to carry data rather than only power, and a charge only cable is the most common reason a controller lights up but never appears on the page. If you are going wireless, hold the small pairing button on the top edge until the Xbox button flashes quickly, then pair from your device.

Step two, wake it up

Press any button on the pad. Browsers deliberately hide gamepads until they see a real input, so nothing at all shows up before you do this. If the controller name still says none detected, press Detect controller and try another cable or another port.

Step three, start the test

Press Start. The diagram goes live and the tool begins tracking which inputs it has seen.

Step four, work around the controller

Press A, B, X and Y. Press both bumpers. Squeeze both triggers all the way to the stop and release. Press all four D-pad directions on their own. Push both sticks in a full circle and click both of them in. Press View and Menu. Every one of those turns green and the counter climbs toward eighteen.

Step five, let the sticks rest

Take your thumbs off both sticks and leave them alone for a few seconds. The two rest readings under the diagram fill in. That pair of numbers is your drift check and it is the single most important thing on this page for a controller that has seen some use.

Step six, run the roll check

Press Start roll check, put your thumb on one arm of the D-pad, and roll it all the way around without lifting. Eight steps light up in sequence. This is the part that shows you whether the hybrid pad is doing its job, and it is explained properly further down.

Step seven, find your Share button

Press the Share button, the small round one below the Guide. Watch the hunter panel. It will either tell you which index it landed on or tell you nothing arrived, and both answers are useful.

Step eight, test the vibration

Run the light, heavy and both motor tests. Save this for last, because it is the only part that sends something back to the controller rather than reading from it.

Step nine, read the results and save them

Scroll to the results section. Read the verdict first, then the notes, then the checklist for anything that stayed grey. Copy the report or download it. A reading on its own is worth something. A reading you can compare against in six months is worth much more.

What Is Actually Different About the 1914

Put a Series controller next to an Xbox One pad and the differences are easy to miss. Here is what genuinely changed, without the marketing.

The Share button

A new physical button between View and Menu. On a console it captures screenshots and clips. On a PC it is the most awkward button on the controller, for reasons covered in the next section.

The D-pad

The biggest practical change. The old plus shape has been replaced by a dished, faceted disc borrowed from the Elite Series 2. Your thumb sits in the dish and the raised edges guide it, which makes rolling between directions dramatically easier. If you play anything with circular motion inputs, this alone is the reason to upgrade.

USB-C

Replaces micro USB. Sturdier connector, plugs in either way round, and one fewer cable to keep in a drawer.

Textured grips on more of the pad

The dotted texture now extends onto the bumpers and triggers rather than sitting only on the back. Comfort rather than function.

Bluetooth Low Energy

The wireless side moved to Bluetooth Low Energy, which improved compatibility with phones, tablets and modern PCs. It also means a firmware update can change connection behaviour on a controller you have owned for years, which is covered below.

Lower latency on console

Microsoft's Dynamic Latency Input reduces the gap between an input and what happens on screen, and it is genuinely a real improvement. It is also a console side feature that a browser cannot observe or measure, so nothing on this page will show it. If input delay is what you are chasing on a PC, the latency test measures the delay you actually have, and the polling rate test shows how often the pad reports underneath it.

What did not change

Two AA cells, the same stick modules, and the same basic internal layout. That last point matters. If your Series controller develops drift, it is the same underlying design that caused it on the older pad, and the same repair applies.

The Share Button Problem

This is the part of the Series controller that confuses people most, and it has nothing to do with your hardware being faulty.

The standard gamepad layout that browsers use was written before this button existed. It defines seventeen positions, numbered zero to sixteen, and the last one is the Guide button. There is no defined slot for Share. So drivers put it wherever they like, which on most systems means index seventeen, sitting past the end of the standard set.

That alone would be manageable. The complication is that Windows usually grabs the button before anything else can see it, exactly as it does with the Guide button, because Share is wired into the Game Bar capture system at the operating system level. So on a typical Windows PC you press Share, Windows takes a screenshot, and the browser receives nothing at all.

The hunter panel on this page sorts out which of those is happening. It watches every button index past sixteen and reports what it finds.

  • Something registers at index seventeen. Your Share button is reaching the browser normally. This is common on macOS and Linux, and on Windows when Game Bar capture has been turned off.
  • Nothing arrives but the indices exist. The button is being intercepted before it reaches the page. Your controller is fine. If you want it back, turn off the Game Bar capture shortcut in Windows settings.
  • Only seventeen indices exist in total. Your driver is presenting the pad as a standard controller with no room for Share. Common over Bluetooth on some systems. Again, not a hardware fault.

The Hybrid D-Pad and the Roll Check

The Series controller's D-pad is the upgrade nobody talks about enough, and the roll check on this page is here so you can measure it rather than guess.

The problem with a traditional plus shaped D-pad is that the diagonals live in the gaps between the arms. There is nothing physical guiding your thumb into them, so rolling from right to down means passing over a corner where neither contact is reliably closed. The input drops out in the middle of the roll. On the older Xbox pad this was a genuine weakness and fighting game players noticed.

The hybrid design solves it with geometry. The dish keeps your thumb centred, the raised outer ring gives it something to run along, and the faceted underside makes the diagonals reachable instead of accidental. The result is that rolling actually works.

How to run the check

Press Start roll check. Put your thumb on any arm of the pad and roll it around the rim in one continuous motion without lifting. Eight steps light up as you pass through them, going up, up right, right, down right, down, down left, left, up left and back round.

Roll slowly the first time. A fast roll can genuinely pass through a diagonal in less time than the browser samples, which produces a gap that is the measurement rather than your hardware. Once you have a clean slow roll, try it at normal speed and see whether it still holds up.

Reading the result

Eight out of eight means a clean roll with no dropouts. Six or seven usually means one diagonal is not registering reliably, which on a controller this new is more often technique than wear. Five or fewer, especially if the same step keeps failing, is worth taking seriously.

Firmware Changes How Your Controller Behaves

This catches people out, because a controller is supposed to be a controller. The Series pad is not quite that simple.

Since launch, firmware updates have changed how the 1914 handles connections in ways you can feel. Early units had noticeably fussier Bluetooth behaviour with some adapters. Later firmware improved pairing reliability, added the ability to remember more than one paired device and switch between them, and refined how the controller behaves when it is connected to both a wireless dongle and a Bluetooth host.

The practical consequence is that two identical looking controllers can behave differently, and your own controller can behave differently after an update than it did before. If you are troubleshooting a connection problem on a Series pad, checking the firmware is a genuine step rather than a formality.

How to check and update it

On a console, plug the controller in, open the settings for accessories, and it will tell you the firmware status. On a PC, install the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store, connect the pad with a cable, and it will offer an update if one is available. Update over a cable rather than wirelessly. A firmware update that fails partway through a Bluetooth connection is a much worse afternoon than the one you were trying to fix.

When to suspect firmware

If the controller connects and then drops repeatedly on Bluetooth but holds steady on a cable, and the batteries are good, firmware is worth checking before you buy a new adapter. If it holds steady on both, firmware is not your problem. Either way, the connection stability test gives you a longer monitoring session than this page does, which is what you want for an intermittent fault.

Three Ways to Connect, and Which to Use When

USB-C cable

The most reliable route and the one to use for any measurement you plan to save. No wireless variables, no battery variables, no adapter variables. Also the route to use for firmware updates.

Bluetooth

Convenient and works with phones, tablets and most modern PCs without extra hardware. One controller at a time on most systems, and headset audio does not travel over it. If you are comparing measurements between sessions, do not mix a Bluetooth session with a cabled one and expect the numbers to line up perfectly.

Xbox Wireless Adapter

The proprietary dongle. Lower latency than Bluetooth, supports several controllers at once, and carries headset audio. Worth it if you play wirelessly on a PC regularly.

One thing specific to the Series pad. It can remember a wireless dongle and a Bluetooth host at the same time, and you switch between them by holding the pairing button. If your controller seems to connect to the wrong thing, that is usually what is happening rather than a fault.

What a Browser Can and Cannot See

Short version, because the Series pad has less hidden hardware than a PlayStation controller does.

Readable. All four face buttons, both bumpers, both stick clicks, all four D-pad directions, View and Menu, both sticks as two axes each, and both triggers as analog values rather than simple presses. Vibration works through the standard effect.

Usually intercepted. The Guide button and the Share button, both taken by Windows before a browser sees them. Neither counts against your result on this page for that reason.

Not reachable at all. The impulse trigger motors. Your controller has four motors, two in the grips and one inside each trigger, and the standard gamepad interface can only address the two in the grips. Nothing done in a browser will make the triggers buzz, on any Xbox controller.

Not present. There is no gyroscope or accelerometer in an Xbox pad to read. If motion input is what you need, our gyro test covers controllers that have it.

Not part of the interface. Battery percentage, on any controller.

What Goes Wrong on a Series Controller

This is a newer pad, so the failure list is shorter than it is for older hardware. That said, it is not a new design underneath.

Stick drift

Still the main event. The Series controller uses the same style of contact based potentiometer sticks as its predecessor, and they wear the same way. The resting value creeps away from zero and your character starts walking on its own. On this page it shows in the two rest readings, and past about 0.08 it is worth acting on.

Battery contacts

The Series pad still runs on two AA cells, so the same intermittent contact problem that plagued the older controller applies here. Spring contacts lose tension, the connection becomes intermittent, and the controller drops out at random while everything else looks fine. Bumper hinges

Improved over the older design but not immune. If LB or RB feels loose, rattles, or only works when pressed at one end, the plastic hinge has most likely cracked. On this page it shows as one bumper staying grey while everything around it goes green.

Trigger travel

A trigger that does not return to zero, or does not reach the top, points at the mechanism rather than the sensor. The trigger pressure test goes deeper into dead travel, hysteresis and uneven range if the meters here look wrong.

What is genuinely better

The USB-C port is a real improvement over the micro USB connector it replaced, both because the connector is mechanically stronger and because it does not care which way round you plug it in. Port failure was a common end of life on older Xbox pads and it is much rarer here.

Reading Your Results

Inputs confirmed

Eighteen inputs are counted, with Guide and Share tracked separately because your operating system usually takes both. Anything still grey at the end is either genuinely broken, mapped somewhere unexpected, or simply not pressed yet. Rule out the last one first.

Stick rest readings

Under 0.02 is clean. Between 0.02 and 0.08 is minor and normally hidden behind a deadzone. Past 0.08 is drift you will feel in play, and it gets worse rather than settling.

If the rest numbers are fine but the sticks still feel wrong, the fault is somewhere else. A stick that will not reach the edges belongs to the analog stick range test. One that feels uneven as you roll it around belongs to the circularity test. One that will not sit still belongs to the stick jitter test, and one that flicks the wrong way when you let go belongs to the snapback test.

D-pad roll

How many of the eight steps you hit in one continuous roll. Eight is what a healthy hybrid pad should give you. If you would rather use the sticks for eight way input, the eight-direction accuracy test scores how cleanly each direction arrives from the analog stick instead.

Share button

Either an index number, meaning it reached the browser, or a note that your system intercepted it. Both are normal results and neither indicates a fault.

Trigger travel

A healthy trigger rests at 0.00 and reaches 1.00. Resting above zero means it is not returning. Topping out short means it is not travelling fully.

Method and Honest Limits

Sampling rate

This page reads the controller in step with your display refresh, so a 60Hz screen means one look roughly every sixteen milliseconds. That is more than enough to confirm a button works or read a resting stick. It is not precise enough to call anything here a timing measurement, and it is why a fast D-pad roll can show a gap that is the sampling rather than your hardware.

Latency cannot be measured from here

The Series controller's latency improvements are real and this page cannot see them. Measuring input delay properly needs a different method entirely.

Wireless adds variables

A dropped packet looks identical to a dropped input from inside a browser. Test on a cable for anything you plan to keep, then test wirelessly separately so you know what the link is contributing. If results differ between sessions, the batteries are worth ruling out first, and the battery health test tracks charge behaviour across a session.

Everything stays local

The controller is read in the page, the maths happens in the page, and the exports are files your browser writes to your own device. Nothing about your controller or your results is sent anywhere.

If nothing appears at all

Press a button on the pad, then try a different cable, then a different port, then Chrome or Edge, which are the most consistent. If it still does not show up, the controller checker confirms whether the browser can see the device at all, and the controller tester and button test give you a second opinion with generic labels. Why does my Share button do nothing on this page?
Almost certainly because Windows took it first for the Game Bar capture system. Your controller is fine. The hunter panel will tell you whether the index exists but never fires, which is exactly what interception looks like.
Is the Series controller actually better than the Xbox One pad on a PC?
For the D-pad, clearly yes, and the roll check on this page will show you why in about ten seconds. For USB-C and Bluetooth compatibility, yes. For latency, the improvement is largely a console side feature. For stick durability, it is the same design, so do not expect drift to be less likely.
My controller pairs and then disconnects repeatedly.
Check three things in order. Fresh AA batteries, because weak cells cause exactly this. Firmware, using the Xbox Accessories app over a cable. Then the Bluetooth adapter itself, since some older adapters pair fine and behave badly afterwards.
How do I tell a 1914 from an older Xbox One controller?
The Share button between View and Menu is the giveaway, and no Xbox One pad has one. Failing that, the model number is printed on the back near the battery door, and the port is USB-C rather than micro USB.
Do the impulse triggers work on PC?
In games that support them, yes. In a browser, no, because the standard gamepad interface has no way to address those motors. That is an interface limitation and not a fault.
My roll check only reaches six.
Roll more slowly first, because a fast roll can pass through a diagonal in less time than the browser samples. If it still stops at six on a slow roll, and the same step keeps failing, run the full D-pad test to see whether it is a genuine dropout.
Does this page work with an Elite Series 2?
The core inputs read fine. The back paddles usually register as whatever button they are mapped to in the controller's own profile rather than appearing separately, and trigger locks will produce a short trigger reading on purpose.
Can I test on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The 1914 pairs over Bluetooth with most modern phones and tablets, and the layout on this page scales down to a single column.
