Xbox 360 Controller Shows As Unknown Device On Windows 11, Driver Will Not Install

Asked by Alejandro R.0 views

Hello, I have a wired Xbox 360 controller, it worked before in Windows 10. Now in Windows 11 it shows in Device Manager as Unknown device with a yellow triangle and says driver not installed. I tried reinstall drivers, update drivers, uninstall and connect again, nothing. Your tester page says no controller. The green ring lights up so the power is ok. What is the most common failure (fallos más comunes) for this? Thank you.

Short Answer

Windows 11 still supports the wired Xbox 360 controller. When it lands as an unknown device, pointing Device Manager at the built-in Xbox 360 Peripherals driver usually fixes it in a minute. If the device shows no hardware IDs at all, suspect the cable or port instead.

Good news first: Windows 11 still includes the driver for wired Xbox 360 controllers, so this is fixable without downloading anything. The common failure is that Windows detects the device but does not match it to that built-in driver, often after an upgrade, or when the controller is a third-party Xbox 360 style pad with slightly different IDs.

You can check which case you have. In Device Manager, open the unknown device, go to Details and choose Hardware Ids. A genuine wired Microsoft Xbox 360 controller reports vendor 045E and product 028E. A third-party pad shows a different vendor, but most still work with the same driver.

The fix is to choose the driver yourself. Windows lists it in a category called Xbox 360 Peripherals, and selecting Xbox 360 Controller for Windows from there usually brings the controller up immediately.

If the Hardware Ids list is empty, or the device appears as Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed), that is a different problem. Windows could not read the controller's identity at all, which points to the cable, the port or the controller's USB connection rather than drivers. The wired 360 controller has a breakaway connector partway along its cable; check it is pushed fully home, because a loose join there causes exactly this.

One more note: a wireless Xbox 360 controller does not work as a controller over its charge cable. It needs the Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Open Device Manager, right-click the unknown device, choose Properties, then Details, then Hardware Ids. Note the VID and PID values.
  2. Right-click the device again and choose Update driver, then Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers.
  3. Choose Xbox 360 Peripherals, then Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. Accept the warning and finish.
  4. Press the Guide button. One quarter of the ring should light, and the gamepad tester should see it after a button press.
  5. If there were no Hardware Ids, reseat the breakaway connector on the cable, try a rear USB port and test again.
  6. If it still fails on a second PC, the cable or controller is faulty.

Tested on: Applies to wired Xbox 360 controllers and compatible third-party pads on Windows 11 with Chrome or Edge. Driver path uses Device Manager's built-in Xbox 360 Peripherals category.

Paso a paso funciona. The Xbox 360 Peripherals option was the fix for me also, after the Windows 11 upgrade.

Thank you very much! Hardware Ids show VID_045E PID_028E, I choose the driver manually and now it works, the ring is lit and your test shows all the buttons.

Mine had no Hardware Ids at all. It was the breakaway connector half pulled out. Felt silly.

Same problem with a cheap 360 style pad from the market. The manual driver choice worked too.
