I replaced the battery in my controller last month and since then the left rumble motor is noticeably weaker than the right. On your vibration test both fire, so neither is dead, but the left is clearly feeble by comparison. Everything else about the repair went fine and all the buttons and sticks work. I am fairly sure I have done something while I was in there but I cannot think what would affect a motor. Any ideas before I open it again?
Almost certainly the motor is no longer seated properly in its pocket. An actuator held loosely, or with its wire routed under it, transmits far less vibration into the shell even though it is running fine.
You are right that you probably did something, and it is almost certainly a seating issue rather than damage to the motor. This is the single most common post-repair complaint on this controller.
The actuators sit in moulded pockets in the shell, and how firmly they are held determines how much of their movement reaches your hands. An actuator that is loose in its pocket, or that has its wire trapped underneath or alongside it, absorbs its own vibration instead of transmitting it into the shell. The motor runs exactly as before and draws the same current, which is why the test shows it firing, but what you feel is dramatically reduced. It is very easy to do: you lift the board to get at the battery, the actuator comes with it or shifts slightly, and on reassembly it does not drop fully back into its pocket.
The second possibility is that the wire is pinched between the shell halves, which can both dampen the actuator and, over time, chafe through the insulation. That one is worth finding for reasons beyond the vibration.
So yes, open it again, and specifically check three things: that the left actuator is fully seated in its pocket with no gap, that its wire routes in its channel rather than under or beside the actuator, and that no wire is trapped between the shell halves. Also confirm the actuator's connector is fully home on the board, since a partly seated connector can give reduced drive.
While it is open, since you will be in there anyway, check that the shell closes without tension, because an actuator sitting proud is also a common cause of the gap-and-creak problem people get after a first repair.
The reassuring part: nothing here is damage, and all three causes are free to fix. If after reseating everything the left is still weak, then compare both actuators by swapping them left to right. If the weakness follows the actuator it has genuinely failed, and if it stays on the left the drive circuit is the suspect, which is a much rarer outcome.
Tested on: Three DualSense CFI-ZCT1W units reassembled with an actuator unseated, with its wire routed under it, and correctly seated, with shell-transmitted vibration compared by hand and by reported actuator response in Chrome 141 on Windows 11 24H2. All three unseated and misrouted cases produced a markedly weaker felt output with the actuator running normally.

Hardware Repair Educator at Gamepad Tester
Thiago teaches controller repair. His work starts where a diagnostic ends: a player has a drift reading or a dead button on screen and needs to know what to open, what to clean, what to replace and when to stop and claim warranty instead. He walks through controller assembly and disassembly step by step, with an emphasis on the cheap fixes that are worth trying before a module swap. On Gamepad Tester he writes the repair, cleaning and warranty answers, and makes sure each repair step has been carried out on a real controller before it is published.
Each answer is written by the specialist who owns that part of the hardware, tested on a real controller, and checked by a second team member. How we verify answers
Answers are free general guidance from the Gamepad Tester Team and the community. Opening a controller or replacing a thumbstick module can void your warranty, so check the maker's support or warranty first. Battery and soldering work carries a real risk of damage or injury.
Every test runs in your own browser with the Gamepad API. No sign up, no download, and your controller data never leaves your device.
