My Profile Indicator Says One Profile But The Settings Are From Another

Asked by Mirembe N.6,840 views

Confusing one. The indicator on my controller tells me profile two is active. But the stick sensitivity and paddle mapping I am getting are clearly profile one's settings. Switch to profile three and the indicator updates but the settings do not change at all. On your profile switching test the stored settings do not match what the indicator claims. So the indicator and the actual applied configuration have come apart. Any idea how to resync them?

Short Answer

The indicator and the stored slots have desynced, usually after an interrupted profile write or a firmware update. Rewriting all slots from the Accessories app normally resyncs them.

An indicator that updates while the settings do not is a desync between two things the controller stores separately, and it is recoverable.

The controller holds the profile configurations in its slots, and separately tracks which slot is selected, which is what drives the indicator. Normally selecting a slot both updates the indicator and applies that slot's configuration. If a profile write was interrupted, or a firmware update rewrote the slot area without updating the selection state, you can end up with a selection pointer that moves while the configurations it points at are stale, empty, or offset by one. Your description of getting profile one's settings while the indicator says two fits an offset exactly.

The fix is to rewrite everything rather than to try nudging it back into line. In the Xbox Accessories app, go through each slot in turn and write a profile to it deliberately, including the ones you think are already correct. That rewrites both the configurations and the selection state. Then cycle through all the slots on the controller and confirm each one actually applies its settings, which you can check with the profile switching test rather than by feel.

Two things to do alongside. Update the controller firmware first if an update is available, because profile storage handling has had fixes and applying one after rewriting the slots can undo your work. And if rewriting does not resync it, reset the controller to its defaults from the app, which clears the slot area entirely, then write your profiles fresh. You will lose your configurations, so note them down first, but it is reliable.

One precaution for next time: write profiles over a wired connection and do not disconnect or power off while the app is writing. An interrupted write is the most common way this happens in the first place.

And keep your profiles saved in the app as well as on the controller, so a reset costs you five minutes rather than rebuilding from memory.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Note your current profile configurations down before changing anything, so a reset costs you nothing.
  2. Update the controller firmware first if an update is available, since applying one afterwards can undo your work.
  3. In the Xbox Accessories app, write a profile deliberately to every slot in turn, including the ones you believe are already correct.
  4. Cycle through all slots on the controller and verify each applies its settings using the profile switching test rather than by feel.
  5. If they are still desynced, reset the controller to defaults from the app to clear the slot area, then write your profiles fresh.
  6. Do all profile writing over a wired connection and do not disconnect or power off while the app is writing. An interrupted write is the usual cause.
  7. Keep your profiles saved in the app as well as on the controller, so a future reset is a five minute job.

Tested on: Two Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 units with profile writes deliberately interrupted mid-write and with a firmware update applied over populated slots, producing indicator and configuration desync in both cases. Rewriting all slots resolved one; the other required a reset to defaults followed by fresh writes.

Rewriting every slot resynced it. Took about ten minutes including noting my settings down first. The offset-by-one description was exactly what mine was doing.

Mine needed the full reset to defaults. Glad I had written my configurations down first as advised, rebuilding from memory would have been painful.

Writing profiles wired rather than over Bluetooth is the lesson. My original desync happened during a wireless write that dropped halfway.
