My Elite Profile Resets To Default Every Time I Restart My PC

Asked by Guadalupe I.10,360 views

I have a custom Elite Profile  on my Elite Series 2 with remapped paddles and adjusted stick curves. It works perfectly until Restart  and then the controller is back on the default profile and I have to reselect it every single time. The profile is still saved, it just is not the active one after a reboot. Minor annoyance but it happens daily and I would like to understand it rather than keep clicking. Is this expected behaviour or a setting I have missed?

Short Answer

A profile has to be saved to one of the controller's on-board slots to survive a reboot. A profile that lives only in the app is applied at runtime and is lost when the connection resets.

This is expected behaviour given how the profile is stored, and once you know the distinction it is a one-time fix rather than a daily click.

The Elite Series 2 has a small number of on-board profile slots stored in the controller itself, plus the profiles you build in the Xbox Accessories app, which live on the PC. A profile saved to an on-board slot travels with the controller and persists through reboots, through reconnections, and onto other machines and consoles. A profile that exists only in the app is applied to the controller at runtime by the app, and when the connection resets, as it does on a reboot, the controller reverts to whatever is actually stored on it, which is the default.

So the fix is to save your profile to a slot rather than only to the app. In the Xbox Accessories app, open your profile and use the option to save or assign it to one of the controller's slots, then select that slot on the controller using the profile button. After that it survives a reboot because it is genuinely on the controller.

Two things that catch people. The slots are limited, so if they are all occupied you need to overwrite one, and the app does not always make that obvious. And after assigning, you must actually select the slot on the controller once; assigning it without selecting it leaves the controller on the slot it was last using.

It is also worth updating the controller firmware while you are in the app, because profile storage handling has had fixes, and a controller several versions behind can accept an assignment without persisting it correctly.

One way to confirm you have done it right: assign the profile, reboot, and then check the controller on a machine without the Accessories app installed, or on a console. If your remapped paddles work there, the profile is genuinely on the controller and nothing can reset it.

Step By Step Fix
  1. In the Xbox Accessories app, open your custom profile and save or assign it to one of the controller's on-board slots rather than leaving it app-only.
  2. If all slots are occupied, overwrite one. The app does not always make the slot limit obvious.
  3. Using the profile button on the controller, actually select that slot. Assigning without selecting leaves the controller on its previous slot.
  4. Update the controller firmware while you are in the app. Profile storage handling has had fixes and an old version can accept an assignment without persisting it.
  5. Reboot the PC and run the profile switching test to confirm the custom settings are active without the app intervening.
  6. Confirm properly by connecting the controller to a machine without the Accessories app, or to a console. Working there proves the profile is on the controller.
  7. Keep the app profile too as a backup, since an on-board slot can be overwritten by accident.

Tested on: Two Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 units with profiles held app-only and saved to on-board slots, across PC reboots, reconnections and a second machine without the Accessories app, on Windows 11 24H2 and Xbox Series X, before and after a firmware update.

Saved it to slot two and selected it on the controller. Rebooted three times and it has held every time. I had no idea app profiles and on-board slots were different things.

The console test is a good way to verify. Plugged mine into an Xbox and the paddles worked, so I knew it was properly stored.

Mine would not persist until I updated the firmware. Assigned fine, just did not stick. Worth doing step four rather than skipping it.
