How Do I Find Out What Firmware Version My Controller Is On?

Asked by Gus H.28,360 views

Simple question I cannot find a straight answer to. I want to know my controller's firmware version so I can tell whether it is behind. Every guide I find tells me to update it but none of them tell me how to see what I have got, and I would rather know before I change anything. Is the version readable from a browser, or do I need the console or a desktop app? Xbox pad if it matters.

Short Answer

A browser cannot read the firmware version, because the Gamepad API does not expose it. On an Xbox pad the Xbox Accessories app on Windows shows it, and on a console it is in accessory settings.

Straight answer: a browser cannot tell you, and it is worth knowing why so you stop looking for a site that will.

The Gamepad API exposes a device identifier string, the button and axis counts and the input values. That is deliberately all of it, for privacy reasons: the less a web page can read about your hardware, the less it can fingerprint you. Firmware version is not in that set, and no browser exposes it. Any site claiming to read your controller firmware is either guessing from the identifier string or is not doing what it says. Our firmware version check tells you where to look and what current versions are, rather than pretending to read it from the page, and that is an honest limit rather than a missing feature.

For your Xbox controller there are two places. On Windows, install the Xbox Accessories app, connect the controller by USB, and it displays the firmware version and tells you whether an update is available. On a console, go to the accessories settings, select the controller, and the version is listed there. Both are reliable and both work without changing anything, which is what you asked for.

For the other common controllers, so you have it in one place. A DualSense does not display a version anywhere in the PS5 interface; the console simply prompts you when an update exists, and Sony's PC support tool reports it on Windows. A Switch Pro Controller or Joy-Con shows controller firmware state through the Controllers screen, which offers an update when one is pending rather than listing a number. Third party pads vary completely and most require the manufacturer's own utility.

One practical note on your underlying question. Being behind on firmware is not automatically a problem, but controller firmware updates do fix real connection and input bugs, so if you are several versions behind and have any dropout or input issue, updating is one of the highest-value things you can do and it takes a couple of minutes.

Step By Step Fix
  1. Accept that a browser cannot read firmware version. The Gamepad API does not expose it, for privacy reasons, so no site can.
  2. On Windows, install the Xbox Accessories app, connect the controller by USB cable, and read the firmware version it displays.
  3. On an Xbox console, open the accessories settings, select the controller, and the version is listed there.
  4. Compare against the current version, which the app will tell you by offering an update or confirming you are current.
  5. For a DualSense, the PS5 prompts you when an update exists rather than showing a number, and Sony's PC support tool reports it on Windows.
  6. For Nintendo controllers, check the Controllers screen on the console, which offers a pending update rather than listing a version.
  7. If you are several versions behind and have any dropout or input problem, update. Controller firmware updates fix real connection bugs and take minutes.

Tested on: Xbox Model 1914 via Xbox Accessories app on Windows 11 24H2 and via Xbox Series X accessory settings, DualSense CFI-ZCT1W on PS5 firmware 25.08 and Windows, Switch Pro Controller via the Controllers screen, plus four third party pads with vendor utilities. Gamepad API output inspected in Chrome 141, Edge 141, Firefox 144 and Safari 18.3 to confirm no version field is exposed.

Xbox Accessories app, two minutes, and I was three versions behind. Did not even know the app existed. Thank you for also explaining why no website can show it, that was the thing confusing me.

Really refreshing that your own tool says where to look instead of claiming to read it. I had used two other sites that implied they could.

Having all four brands in one answer is genuinely useful. Bookmarked.

Updating fixed a dropout I had assumed was my Bluetooth adapter. Would never have connected the two.
