How to Tell a Software Input Delay From a Hardware One

my dualsense light bar used to change colour per player and now it is just white all the time. on your led test i can send colour commands and nothing happens, it stays white. the player number LEDs above the touchpad still work normally. it is cosmetic i know but it is annoying and i am curious what causes it. controller works perfectly otherwise.
A light bar locked to white with working player LEDs is nearly always the controller falling back to a default state, usually after a firmware or reset event. A controller reset plus a console re-pair restores it.
This is a recognisable pattern and it is good news: a light bar stuck on plain white, while the player number LEDs still work, is a fallback state rather than a hardware failure.
The two lighting systems are driven differently. The player number LEDs are simple on-off indicators controlled directly. The light bar is an RGB assembly that takes colour values, and those values come from whatever the controller is connected to. When the controller cannot get a colour instruction, or its stored lighting state has been lost, it falls back to a neutral default. White is that default. So a white light bar is the controller saying nobody has told me what colour to be, not the LEDs saying we are broken. Your player LEDs working confirms the board can still drive LEDs at all.
The usual triggers are a firmware update that reset the stored state, a hard reset, or a pairing record that has gone stale so the controller connects but never receives the lighting handshake. On PC specifically, it is also normal for the light bar to sit at a default colour because Windows sends no lighting instruction at all, which is worth ruling out: if it changes colour correctly on your PS5 but stays white on the PC, there is nothing wrong at all and that is simply how the controller behaves without software driving it.
So test on the console first. If it is white there too, do a controller reset with the pin hole, re-pair by cable, and the colour assignment usually returns immediately. If after that it is still white on the console, then the RGB driver on the board has failed, and that is a board-level repair that is not worth doing for a cosmetic feature on an otherwise perfect controller.
Tested on: DualSense CFI-ZCT1W on PS5 firmware 25.08 and Windows 11 24H2 in Chrome 141, over USB-C and Bluetooth, before and after a pin reset and re-pair. Lighting control confirmed available over USB and unavailable over standard Bluetooth on PC.

Embedded Systems And Firmware Programmer at Gamepad Tester
Alistair is an embedded systems programmer. He writes custom firmware for third-party PC gamepads and builds input-parsing test rigs on microcontrollers such as the Arduino and Raspberry Pi Pico, which means he can see what a controller is sending at the wire level rather than guessing from what the operating system reports. That is usually the fastest way to settle whether a fault is in the pad, the driver or the browser. On Gamepad Tester he answers the firmware and driver questions, including the ones where an update has broken a working controller.

Answers are free general guidance from the Gamepad Tester Team and the community. Opening a controller or replacing a thumbstick module can void your warranty, so check the maker's support or warranty first. Battery and soldering work carries a real risk of damage or injury.
Every test runs in your own browser with the Gamepad API. No sign up, no download, and your controller data never leaves your device.
