My Edge Profiles Will Not Switch With The Function Buttons Any More

Asked by Giulia B.7,980 views

DualSense Edge. I have three profiles set up and the function buttons below the sticks used to switch between them instantly. Now pressing Fn plus a face button does nothing, the profile indicator does not change, and whatever profile was last active stays active. Your profile switching test confirms the settings do not change when I try. The controller works fine otherwise, all buttons, both sticks, triggers. Have I locked something or is this a fault?

Short Answer

Most likely the profiles are not assigned to the shortcut slots any more, which happens after a firmware update or a settings reset. Reassign them on the PS5, since profile switching is managed console-side.

This is usually a configuration state rather than a hardware fault, and the giveaway is that everything else on the controller works perfectly.

On a DualSense Edge, profiles live on the controller but their assignment to the function button shortcuts is managed through the PS5. Each shortcut slot points at a stored profile. If that mapping is cleared, which happens after a controller firmware update, after a settings reset, or if the profiles were created on a different console, the function buttons still work electrically but have nothing to point at, so pressing them does nothing visible. That matches your description exactly, including the last active profile staying put.

The first thing to confirm is whether the function buttons themselves register at all, and your test gives you that. If the Fn press shows up as an input but no profile change follows, the buttons are fine and the assignment is the problem. If the Fn press does not register as an input either, that is a different and rarer fault in the button itself.

Assuming the buttons register, go into the PS5 controller settings, open the Edge profile settings, and reassign each profile to its shortcut slot. It is worth deleting and recreating one profile as a test if reassigning alone does not take, because a profile stored in a corrupted state will sometimes accept an assignment without applying.

Two other things that produce this. A controller firmware update that has not completed leaves profile handling in a half state, so check for and apply any pending update. And on PC, profile switching behaves differently: the Edge's profiles are configured through PlayStation's own PC support rather than through Windows, so if you have only been testing on PC, confirm on the PS5 before concluding anything.

Step By Step Fix
  1. In the profile switching test, press the Fn button and confirm it registers as an input. Registering means the button is fine and the assignment is the problem.
  2. On the PS5, open the controller settings for the Edge and check whether each profile is still assigned to a shortcut slot. Reassign any that are empty.
  3. Check for and apply any pending controller firmware update. An incomplete update leaves profile handling in a half state.
  4. If reassigning does not take, delete one profile and recreate it, then assign it. A corrupted profile can accept an assignment without applying it.
  5. Test switching on the PS5 rather than on PC. Profile management is console-side and PC behaves differently.
  6. If the Fn button does not register as an input at all, that is a hardware fault in the function button rather than a profile problem.
  7. After fixing, switch through all three profiles and verify each one's stick and trigger settings actually apply, not just that the indicator changes.

Tested on: DualSense Edge on PS5 firmware 25.08 and Windows 11 24H2, Chrome 141, with profiles assigned, unassigned, and after a deliberate controller settings reset. Function button inputs verified independently of profile switching in each state.

All three slots were empty. A firmware update must have cleared them. Reassigned and it works exactly as before. Ten minutes in settings instead of the repair I was dreading.

One of mine was corrupted and would not take an assignment. Deleting and recreating it was the fix, so step four is worth doing rather than skipping.

I had only been testing on PC and assumed the controller was broken. Confirmed on the console and it was fine there all along.
